I love a good thrift store/flea market find. Many of my Saturday mornings are spent browsing local thrift stores. It’s not always easy to find what you’re looking for, but once you get the hang of it, there are an endless amount of objects to repurpose and use in DIY projects at a small price – awesome! In my opinion, you don’t ALWAYS have to buy something expensive or new furniture/home décor items. Here are some things to keep in mind the next time you go thrifting:
Location: the location of the store totally matters. Thrift stores all have similar things as far as dishes and furniture go, but I’ve found that there are differences in stores I’ve been to where I’m from (Ohio!) to where I live now (Virginiaaaa). Take that into account, and travel around a little bit, you may be surprised at what you can find.
Know what you want: Know what you want – but keep an open mind. Hmmm. That colander is old and gross but maybe it has a good shape and could be cleaned up and used for a planter. That scratched but solid wood $10 end table could fit right in with your décor with just a little bit of sanding and paint. Frames can be painted, bottles and jars reused for storage or decorative elements. Don’t just discount something because it’s not automatically pretty!
Be mindful of when you go: Different thrift stores restock at different times. Ask what day they put out new items and come on that day. The best things go quickly.
Be picky: or your husband will think you're a hoarder :)
The following items are things I’ve thrifted:
Bottles: Confession: I love old bottles and have WAY too many of them. I use old bottles for display or as vases.
Frames: There are usually a variety of frames that can either be painted or left as is like this orange and yellow one.
Planter: Pots and planters can be expensive, so finding them at the thrift store is always exciting - especially when they are as interesting as this rustic wood and metal geometric planter.
Mirror: This mirror is one of my favorite things I have hanging on the wall. I just LOVE the rustic look and houndstooth pattern.
Happy Thrifting! Don’t get discouraged if you don’t find what you need every time. Scoring great items can take some time!
